Trees For Sale

Currently we are advertising plum trees for sale but apples, pears, quinces and medlars are available on request. Please ask for details.

All trees are supplied bareroot in the autumn/winter to keep the price down.

Rootstocks

Fruit tree propagation is usually carried out by asexual reproduction. The desired variety (scion) of fruit is grafted on to a rootstock. The rootstock determines the eventual height and width of the tree. For example you are more likely to want a rootstock that produces a smaller tree for a garden than an orchard.

A Pixy rootstock would produce a tree up to 3 metres with a spread of 3 metres whereas a Brompton can produce a tree over 5 metres tall with a width of 4.5 metres.

Our old Victorias, before the new rootstocks became available, were all grafted onto Myrobelans (Prunus cerasifera) or cherry plums as that was all that was available.

Below is listed the available rootstocks for the plum trees that we supply.

Pixy

Dwarf. Suitable for gardens but require watering and good soil. Trees grow up to 3 metres tall and a width of 3 metres. Can be spaced 3 metres apart. Bear fruit after 3/4 years.

St Julian A

Semi-vigorous. Most of our Victorias for "Pick Your Own" are on these as they don't grow too tall but supply an ample amount of fruit. More tolerant of poorer conditions. Trees grow to 3.5 metres tall and a width of 3.5 metres. Bear fruit after 5 years.

Brompton

Very Vigorous. Produce very tall statuesque trees. Most traditional orchards are now replanted with these. Trees grow over 5 metres and have a 4.5 metre spread. Trees should be spaced. 6.5 metres apart. Good for long grass. Require little maintenance if planted correctly.

My favourite plum. Ripens last two weeks in July. Strong plummy flavour which makes for good jam/crumble making as well as a dessert plum.
